ISME has a small team that manages the administration of the Society. Every other role is held by a member who volunteers their time and expertise for the benefit of all.

Structure

ISME has a Board of Directors, Commissions , Special Interest Groups and  Committees, supported by a small management team.

Board and Executive

The ISME Board of Directors comprises fifteen members who, during the two years of their appointment, dedicate much of their professional and private time to executing the Society's policies and activities. They represent as many aspects of music education and as many cultural and ethnic groups as possible. Five members of the Board form the Executive. These are  the President, President Elect, Immediate Past President and two Board Members, which are invited by the President.  The 'presidential term' is a six year commitment: two as President Elect, two as President and two as Past President. The Board changes at the General Assembly, held at the World Conference.  Board meetings are held at each of the biennial world conferences (one for the outgoing Board and one for the incoming Board) and one meeting is also held in the intermediate year. Board members can hold a seat for no more than two consecutive terms, standing for election for each term.

Commissions

Commissions are designated in the Constitution and Bylaws and are designed to offer members opportunities to explore a specialised area in greater depth. More information about Commissions can be found on their dedicated page. Commissions are headed by a chair and there is a committee of commissioners to support the chair in their work. The list of commission chairs for the 2024-26 biennium will be updated soon below.

Special Interest Groups

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are ad hoc groups designed to offer members opportunities to explore a specialised area that is of current interest. More information about the Special Interest Groups can be found on their dedicated page. Special Interest Groups are headed by a convenor and there is a committee to support the convenor in their work. The list of SIG Convenors for the 2024-26 biennium will be updated soon below.

Committees

From time to time, the Board may establish a committee to oversee a specific aspect of ISME's work. These are Standing Committees and Working Committees and for more information about them go to their dedicated page
