Associate Professor Annie Mitchell is Chair of ISME’s Commission for the Education of the Professional Musician (CEPROM) and member of ISME’s Jazz Special Interest Group (SIG). Annie has a PhD in Music (Third Stream Composition), Masters Degree in Education (Adult Education in Music), Bachelor of Arts (Music) and Diploma of Education (Music/History). Her Doctorate included the composition of two jazz concerti plus thesis. Lecturing in Southern Cross University’s (Australia) Contemporary Music Program, she teaches contemporary music theory, musicianship, musicology, composition and arranging, music education, piano and ensemble. Her research interests include contemporary music theory, jazz and third stream composition, music pedagogy, community music, adult education, edutourism, and entertainment and musical careers on cruise ships. In 2012 Annie received an Australian University Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. Annie is double bassist in the Lismore Symphony Orchestra, North Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and Clarence Valley Orchestra and was pianist with the Northern Rivers Big Band. She performs 12-15 concerts each year and composes and arranges compositions for orchestras, big bands, ensembles and choirs. Annie supervises and examines Honours students and post-graduate students at Masters and Doctoral levels, with particular interest in creative work/research multimodal projects.
