Description

The 2021-2022 ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grants will focus on music education practices, and will provide funding for individuals or teams to support music education research projects that speak to the mission, vision and core values of ISME, as articulated in the Constitution and  Strategic Plan. With an emphasis on the biennium theme, A Visible Voice, and the core value of internationalisation, the grants should enable the development of new or extension of existing research projects that either:

  1. Focus on notions of intercultural respect through music education
  2. Provide an audit of music education in various regions with particular attention to underserved communities of the world.

A Visible Voice speaks to recognising and ensuring respect for the concept, context, processes and resources of music education of all types, formats and cultures.

The successful applications would present proposals that focus on unique music education situations, and thus provide principles, approaches and/or samples of learning materials. The projects would, among others, document curricular issues, interrogate matters around teacher education, resources, learning activities and outcomes as well as out of school support and events. A project may, therefore involve, but not be limited to, any or a combination of:

  • Research and/or related activities in music education, including knowledge mobilisation and resource development
  • Research and/or activities that demonstrate music education as an intervention that addresses/responds to psycho-social challenges such as brought about by displacement,  immigration or calamities such as the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Research involving the articulation and/or documentation of music education practices and resources that present opportunities for the understanding of cultural practices, themes and principles in and for music education
  • Design and implementation of approaches for music education that may result in best practices or models that can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level, towards enhancing cultural understanding
  • Interrogation and documentation of indigenous philosophies, procedures and materials towards giving visibility to diverse music education voices

ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grants may involve local, national or international collaboration.

ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grants are valued at up to $3,000 over 12 to 15 months.

Evaluation and Adjudication

ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grant applications are adjudicated and available funds are awarded through a competitive process. ISME is committed to ensuring high-quality adjudication of all proposals.

ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grants are adjudicated by members of the ISME Board. The exact number and composition of review committees will be determined by the number and nature of proposals received. Members of the ISME Board involved in the review process, if not in a conflict of interest with the applicant or any team members, are asked to evaluate the proposal based on the evaluation criteria below.

Committee members read all applications submitted by a given closing date. Members, as a group, then evaluate and rank all the proposals assigned to their committee.

ISME makes funding decisions based on the recommendations of the adjudication committee and on the funds available. Committee discussions will be guided by the principle of minimum essential funding.

Evaluation Criteria and Scoring

The following criteria and scoring schemes are used by the adjudication committees to evaluate ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grant applications:
