As previously advised, ISME has constituted a new Special Interest Group, Decolonising and Indigenising Music Education (DIME). This SIG is now officially launched and the co-ordinators are:
- Clare Hall (Monash University, Melbourne, Australia)
- Te Oti Rakena (University of Auckland, New Zealand)
- David Johnson (Lund University, Sweden)
- Anita Prest (University of Victoria, Canada)
The SIG's mission is to promote music education research, practice and partnerships for and with Indigenous communities. More information on the rationale, mission and aims can be found on the DIME page.
The DIME SIG is also committed to decolonising the ways they operate. To that end, an Indigenous Steering Committee (ISC) comprised of Indigenous scholars, educators and musicians will guide their practices and activities. To date, the following people have agreed to join this committee:
- Te Oti Rakena (Ngāpuhi, Kai Tahu and Ngāti Ruanui, Aotearoa/New Zealand)
- Missy Haynes (Gitxsan, Canada)
- Franklin Lewis (Coloured, South Africa)
- Aaron Wyatt (Noongar, Yamatji and Wongi, Australia)
- Kelly Laurila (Sámi, Canada)
- Ánde Somby (Sámi, Norway)
- Sebastian Nahuelpan Saavedra (Mapuche, Chile)
This is just the start. Anita Prest said: We are currently seeking Indigenous representatives from South Asia, East Asia and Latin America. Please contact us if you, or someone you know, is interested in joining the ISC.”

As part of their preparation for launch, the SIG has developed an ISC Code of Practice which has now been added to the DIME SIG page.
